What Is Inbound Marketing, Anyway?

These days, inbound marketing is the leading marketing method for companies that want to grow their business. The most successful organizations have embraced the inbound method to attract prospects, convert leads, build relationships and ultimately increase sales.

However, even though you’ve heard the term over and over (and maybe even used it), you’re not alone if you’re wondering what exactly is inbound marketing, anyway?

Inbound marketing refers to marketing activities that draw visitors IN to your company by providing consistent, helpful and relevant content. This is content they actually want and can be delivered through blogs, podcasts, videos, white papers, social media or other channels. The goal of inbound marketing is build relationships over time to attract, convert, close and delight customers.

This approach contrasts greatly with traditional marketing that pushes advertising OUT such as cold-calling, direct mail, radio, TV ads, flyers, spam and telemarketing. Inbound provides customers something they want, when they want it, rather than annoying interruptions at the most inopportune times (telemarketing calls during dinner, anyone?).

This short video does an excellent job of summarizing the basics and benefits of inbound marketing:

So you can see how consistenly providing helpful content will help you gain credibility, build relationships and increase your pipeline of leads, which can then be converted into sales.

Of course, there is an art to this method, and to be successful at inbound marketing you need the proper training, tools and people in place to execute it properly.
